RDAI and Creative Matters launch rug exhibition at Paris Design - rug exhibition
The rug exhibition features handwoven pieces created by RDAI and Creative Matters in collaboration with master artisans in Nepal.

The collection brings together the architectural firm RDAI and the textile design studio Creative Matters, translating abstract organic geometries into vast and delicate woven environments through a partnership with master artisans in Nepal.

Wool and silk blend for depth

The rugs feature a base of Himalayan wool, with design elements highlighted in Chinese silk. RDAI architect Johan Thuillot explains that the pieces are meant to play with perspective and light. For the butterfly designs, the team focused on how wing scales reflect and refract light, creating gradient and radiating motifs that mimic iridescence.

Spider web designs are rendered in two variations, capturing either glistening dew drops or the work of Madagascar tangle-web spiders. In both cases, luminous silk softly emerges from the depth of the clear wool background.

Handcrafted uniqueness

Clémence Hardelay, Creative Matters’ director of design for Europe, notes that the handwoven nature introduces imperfections that are part of the collection’s appeal. The artisans adjust the weave to account for the reality of working with organic materials, resulting in a piece that is unique to its specific location.

The companies have worked together on commercial projects in the past, but this is their first independent collaboration. Hardelay describes having more freedom in color and design as a key benefit of the partnership. The rugs are available through Creative Matters and RDAI, with plans to expand availability through select showrooms and retail partners.

Viewers can see “Zoometry” at the Mouvement Modernes Gallery until September 23.
