Formica Corp. opened entries for the 2027 FORM Student Innovation Competition, marking the contest’s tenth edition and inviting emerging designers across the United States, Canada and Mexico to make hue the centerpiece of new furniture concepts.
Color takes center stage in a new design challenge
The theme, “Color as the Main Character,” pushes participants to treat pigment as a primary strategy rather than a decorative afterthought.
Entrants must submit a brief project statement and a color rendering that shows how the chosen shades drive the overall experience.
Each submission must incorporate at least three products from the Formica Brand or its Fenix line. The requirement ensures that the pieces showcase the material’s durability while highlighting bold visual statements.
“Color is a powerful force in design, one that has the ability to influence emotion, guide interaction and shape the way people experience spaces around them,” said Meghan Howell, North American design and creative director at Formica Corp. “We’re excited to see how participants use color by putting it at the center of their designs, using thoughtful, bold and unexpected choices to create pieces that are both meaningful and memorable.”
The call for entries runs through February 19, 2027. Submissions will be evaluated by a panel of industry veterans, though the specific judges have not been disclosed.

Prizes link creativity with industry exposure
The top three winners will receive cash awards: $2,000 for the grand prize, $1,000 for second place and $500 for third.
In addition, the winning designs will be fabricated and displayed at NeoCon 2027, a major gathering for commercial interior professionals.
All three honorees will travel to Chicago as guests of the company, where they can network with senior designers, manufacturers and potential collaborators.
Historically, the competition traces its roots to a 2008 challenge that invited design legends such as Zaha Hadid and Massimo Vignelli to create artworks from Formica products. Those pieces were later shown at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, establishing a precedent for linking high‑profile art with everyday materials.
Compared with earlier iterations, the current contest leans heavily on color theory, echoing a broader industry shift where hue drives brand narratives more than texture alone.
How the contest fits into design education
Universities with architecture, industrial design or interior design programs are encouraged to promote the opportunity to their students.

Faculty members can use the brief as a classroom project, allowing learners to explore real‑world constraints while experimenting with palette choices.
Students gain real‑world experience.
The competition accepts entries from students enrolled in accredited programs, requires a minimum of three Formica or Fenix products per design, sets a deadline of February 19, 2027, and announces winners in mid‑May.
While the prize money is modest, the chance to see a design built and installed at a high‑profile trade show often outweighs the cash component for many participants. The visibility can lead to internships, freelance commissions or even full‑time positions with firms that attend NeoCon.
Overall, the tenth edition of the FORM Student Innovation Competition highlights its ongoing commitment to nurturing fresh ideas while keeping the brand at the forefront of material innovation.
